Banking Law
In 1998, the Republic of Panama updated its banking legislation
to ensure its compliance with the Basel I principles, which included
creating a new banking regulator (the Banking Superintendency of
the Republic of Panama).
This new legislation brought in a number of new dispositions, such
as economic and administrative autonomy for the banking regulator,
capital and liquidity indexes for banks and regulations for interparty
transactions and lending to economic groups/related parties.
